Can anyone help with anti-virus setup on how my drive is actually scaned?

there is a section in my antivirus software that allows you to choose how your drives are scaned but i dont understand what they mean or which is the best option or most thorough here is a list of what i have

Skip offline files: If the offline bit is set, the file is skipped. Any application may set the offline bit without actually placing the file offline.

Open files using backup semantics: This option allows the scanning of files that for security reasons are not normally readable except by a specific user.

Skip offline and sparse files (default): Some applications set the file sparse bit to indicate that part of the file is not present on the disk. Because some HSM products set this bit and other don't, consult your HSM vendor to verify whether the sparse bit is set.

Skip offline and sparse files with a reparse point: Some vendors use reparse points. An application that uses reparse points will also use an appropriate device driver to manage reparse

The two best / most thorough options from your list are:

1) Scan all files, forcing demigration (fills drive) and,

2) Scan all files, without forcing demigration (slow). Report It

Why does my pc take so much time to boot?

i hv windows xp, sp2. i am using avg free edition antivirus software. when i am booting my pc, the desktop appears quite fast but in the taskbar, i see a window named smart wizard and when i move my mouse over the taskbar the hourglass appears indicating some sort of work is going on. the smart wizard disappears after 3 to 4 minutes and only then my pc is ready for use. CAN ANYBODY HELP ME?

Why does my pc take so much time to boot?

The most liekly culprit is spyware. Try LavaSoft's AdAware personal, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Microsoft's antispy beta. Also make sure that AOL is not installed on the computer as it extremely slows computers down. Spybots advanced tools allows you to manage startup items better than msconfig which can also be used.

You must have alot of applications to boot in startup. Get rid of some of them and your computer will boot faster.
For my pc, I have too many programs on the task bar, both right side and left. By removing some tasks, I sped it up. Then I added the Google side bar-- and slowed it down! That's pretty clear to me.

toodles
If you click ctr alt del you'll get the task manager up, have a look in the processes and see if there's sneaky programs running. you might find that there's a program eating your memory up.

Also I use multiple spyware scanners as sometimes one won't catch something that another does.

Is the problem with Ron Paul... his supporters?

After spamming YA! for months they've finally begun spamming our email! I seriously doubt this is something Ron Paul himself is aware of or would much less condone. While I myself like Ron Paul and if I were a Republican he would be my second choice after John McCain (a true American Hero) I realize that the Republicans simply lack a candidate with any charisma... so the Ron Paul crowd think if only the populace knew of his platform they would also support him. THE PROBLEM WITH RON PAUL IS HIS SUPPORTERS... they're obnoxious!

BitDefender Captures Spam Used to Influence U.S. Presidential Election

Spammer Plugs Ron Paul for President

http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/071029/200710290...

BUCHAREST, Romania--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BitDefender庐, an award-winning provider of antivirus software and data security solutions, today found that a large wave of unsolicited e-mails exhorting the qualities of Ron Paul as a candidate for the U.S. presidency are being captured by BitDefender spam filters.

The spam e-mails originate from many different computers, with a wide geographical distribution, making BitDefender specialists suspect that the spammer is using a 鈥渂ot鈥?network for his ''run.鈥?br>

The e-mails appear to have false 鈥淭o:鈥?fields 鈥?a hallmark of spam 鈥?making it highly unlikely that this is part of a legitimate campaign.

''We haven't observed any previous cases of using spam to try and influence a presidential campaign, in the USA or elsewhere,鈥?declared Vlad Valceanu, head of BitDefender鈥檚 antispam unit. 鈥淚t remains to be seen what impact (if any) this incident has on the outcome of the election, but it's certainly a worrying incident, as people of other political inclinations may feel compelled to counter with some spam of their own.

Why am I besieged with ads?

I subscribed to Norton antivirus software in 2006. I had no problem with an outburst of unwanted ads. As soon as I loaded the 2007 Norton 360 package I was flooded with ads. I want to get rid of them. Please help.

Why am I besieged with ads?adware

sounds like adware to me. and norton as antivirus can fight viruses only. you need an anti-spyware to fight all other threats. i recommend spyware doctor as it's most reputable these days. here's a download: http://www.2-spyware.com/review-spyware-...

Why am I besieged with ads?antivirus scan

    You have Adware.

Download Adaware (Ad Aware... as in Aware of Ads)

    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Best Anti-Adware/Spyware on the market. It's free too with paid options.

Internet Explorer alows websites to download and run malicious programs on your computer... WITHOUT YOU KNOWING!

That's why Firefox is so popular. It does not allow this to happen.

    You can find FF here

    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Yes, Ad-Aware is free and is good, however you might want to consider not allowing so many cookies. It may reduce the ads. From Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, carefully review the Privacy, Security and Content tabs.

Try turning off System Restore, then boot in Safe Mode and run your anti virus. Or try to remove it manually.

Its well known, if your Google you should be able to fins instructions for removing it.

Before attempting to remove malware you must switch off System Restore as back up files will be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.

Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

    Problem with computer shutting down...?

A friend of mine has a computer that was built by someone who supposedly knew what he was doing...The computer will freeze/shutdown randomly, but it seems to do it more so when running antivirus software and other processes that take a lot of juice to run...

The last message came up on a blue screen...''Aproblem has been detected...windowns has been shut down to prevent damage. Problem caused by ntfs.sys....Page_fault_in_nonpagedarea.''

Has anyone seen this problem and what can he do to fix it...it has been going on since he got the computer and is rather annoying...he cant even get through a mcafee virus scan without it shutting down.

Problem with computer shutting down...?anti virus protection

The person who built it probably gave it the wrong heatsink which could overheat the processor and shut it down. Check to see what model heatsink he has and see if its compliant with the processor. Or check if the fan on the heatsink is working.

    Problem with computer shutting down...?antivirus

The computer more than likely has a virus.

Your friend will need to reinstall windows, using fdisk to completely clean up the problem.
it could be a RAM issue, how much ram is in the thing? you want at least 256mb for xp.
If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
