I need help with computer downloads off internet.?

When I touch the download button a small square from windows IE comes in the left upper corner, immediately disappears, I hear a pop up blocked type sound and then the website says thank you for downloading whatever it is. The download doesn't come through. I'm on a windows xp system and I'm trying to load antivirus, spyware software. I've checked different things and can't figure out what's wrong. Can anyone give suggestions. I don't even know where to go on the net for help sites. I tried microsoft, pc world, cnet

I don't have an answer. It is a good choice to download Fire Fox or Sea Monkey web browsers and use them instead of windows IE.

here is the reason why you can't download - yr pop-up blocker is enabled and blocks the new window that is actually download widget

solution :

allow pop-ups in internet explorer - when information bar opens and tells you that it just blocked pop-up click on it and click allow pop-ups from this site than try to download it again
